For Immediate Release - March 12, 2020
WASHINGON, DC - The American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL) has sent the following letter to Dr. Segaran Pillai, Director of the Office of Laboratory Safety for the Food and Drug Administration, offering the support of the independent laboratory community to supplement those efforts if the need arises.
As of March 12, 2020, over 1,200 confirmed cases of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been discovered nation-wide. The ACIL recognizes that additional testing capacity may be required to appropriately respond to this pandemic and stands ready to assist the agency as they continue to confront this outbreak. Our members have the testing expertise and understand the industry standards and best practices to ensure the best outcomes for all Americans confronting this disease.
The ACIL is an association representing independent commercial scientific and engineering firms with over 1,000 facilities across the U.S. engaged in testing, product certification, consulting, and research and development to enhance public health and safety. Their membership is a part of an $11 billion industry, unaffiliated with any institution, company or trade group that might affect their ability to conduct investigations, render reports, or give professional, objective, and unbiased counsel.

Cannabis Working Group
ACIL is the nation’s ONLY association representing the independent testing community and as such we believe it is important that we play an active role in crafting responsible cannabis laws and regulations. ACIL neither advocates for, nor against, the legalization of cannabis/hemp, but supports independent testing through well-formulated policies that mitigate bias in research and promotes scientific rigor and integrity to ensure products are safe for end consumers.
Through the Cannabis Working Group (CWG), ACIL is committed to supporting the medical cannabis/hemp industry as it relates to the need for quality, independent testing. Additionally, ACIL recognizes the need for standardized testing procedures and laboratory accreditation within the cannabis industry.
