Title:  Introduction to Measurement Uncertainty

This course is a suitable introduction for both calibration and testing laboratories personnel who are new to the Measurement Uncertainty Estimation process. The process of estimating Measurement Uncertainty per The Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) is covered at a basic level. Basic Measurement Uncertainty budgets are developed through a participatory process.

Course Content

  •  Introduction:
    • The requirement for uncertainty estimates.
    • Uncertainty References, Definitions, The GUM; and other more user-friendly material.
  •     Mathematics:
    • Significant digits, scientific notation, and units conversion.
    • Basic statistics used in the GUM.
  •     Estimating Uncertainties:
    • Type A and Type B methods.
    • Distributions, confidence levels, standard deviation.
    • Distributions and Applying corrections.
